How Often Should I Change My Car's Oil?
It's one of the first things people tell you when you get a car: "Don't forget to check the oil!" At Pedersen Toyota, we are no different from your driving schoolteacher in our commitment to getting you to check and change your oil regularly. Since we don't expect you to just take our word for it, the service department at Pedersen Toyota believes it is extremely helpful to give you an overview of the function of oil in your car and how often you should get it changed.
Why Is Oil Important?
The short answer to this question is that it helps protect most of the parts of your car that make it run. Not only does it lubricate your engine, it also facilitates cooling, the prevention of damaging metal-to-metal contact, and increased power. If you make the mistake of running your vehicle with no oil, you will eventually blow out your engine. This is not a problem that can be fixed, you will need a new engine, which will cost you a great deal of money. Oh, and just a little food for thought, engine replacement is almost never covered by insurance, so there's that. To avoid this fate, you need to have your oil level checked regularly. Toyota suggests that you do so every time you refill your vehicle with fuel.
When Do I Need a Complete Oil Change?
No matter the level of oil in your car, if it's been there for a long period of time it will become packed with contaminants that include carbon and other metals. These particles will slowly damage the engine and over time cause performance to drop and even lead to the same problems as having low oil levels. This is where a regular oil change comes into play. While there are many different opinions around about when exactly to get your oil changed, Toyota offers a variety of guidelines. If your Toyota requires the use of 0w-20 synthetic oil, you might be able to get away with changing every 10,000 miles or 12 months. For other oil types, the general rule of thumb is 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. On top of these suggestions, Pedersen Toyota also like to drop that number down to 3,000 miles if you are engaged in certain types of extreme driving condition or scenarios including:
· Extensive idling and /or low-speed operation
· Driving on dusty, rough, muddy or salt-spread roads
· Towing or police, taxi or commercial operation
· Repeated short-trip operation at freezing temperatures
· Extended use of brakes while driving
· More than 50 % operation in heavy city traffic during hot weather above 90 °F (32 °C)
Because drivers around Fort Collins are no strangers to many of these conditions, we suggest you pay attention to your daily drive and see if you qualify for oil changes more often.
