The RAV4 has been with us now since the 1990s, when it was part of what turned out to be the first wave of compact crossovers, which are small SUVs built on the underpinnings of cars rather than truck-based platforms. Like many enduring models in the current auto industry, the 2016 Toyota RAV4 has grown over time, and it's now technically a mid-size crossover rather than a compact, although the seven-seat Highlander is really the manufacturer's entry in the midsize segment.

The RAV4 is a real success story for Toyota though, and it's become a perennial best-seller among small crossovers. It's understandably popular with families and it's a strong competitor of the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester and others in this fiercely contested segment of the industry.

There are four different trim levels in the 2016 Toyota RAV4 lineup, which are the LE, XLE, SE and Limited. A single engine and transmission keep things nice and simple throughout the range; a 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine develops 176 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque, although there is also a separate RAV4 Hybrid model for those wanting to go in that direction.

One key area of choice with the 2016 Toyota RAV4 is whether to go for the all-wheel-drive system with its electronic control system, which distributes power to the rear when slipping is detected at the front wheels. The system gives a genuine 50/50 fixed power split at up to 25 mph in "4WD Lock" mode, but when Sport mode is selected, 10 to 50 percent of torque is sent to the back wheels for better handling. Dry pavement hard cornering is also improved by the system, and the Lock feature gives predictable levels of traction in adverse weather conditions so you can power through snow or muddy trails in your RAV4.

Family vehicles like the RAV4 have to be safe, and they don't get safer than the Toyota. Not only can it boast a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, the NHTSA has also given its ultimate seal of approval with its own five-star rating for overall safety.
